The touring production of the beloved musical starring Stefanie Jones as the titular magical nanny is practically irresistible
Some shows manage a little dusting of magic but Mary Poppins virtually empties the carpetbag. This newly mounted production drawn from the much-loved PL Travers book and 1964 Disney film has every bit of the whimsical charm you’d expect.
The story of the Banks family and their search for a nanny is deeply etched into the British psyche. So, it takes a delicate touch to blend the original book with the well-known film and come up with something that feels like a distinct experience. Through sharp choreography and well-placed additional songs, the creative team has found the right formula.
Imported from the Australian production (possibly by floating umbrella though unconfirmed) come Stefanie Jones (Mary Poppins) who is every inch the perfect nanny with movement as sharp as the brim of her hat and Jack Chambers (Bert) who echoes the bygone era of a true song and dance man.
Practically perfect? It’s practically irresistible.
