Olivier Awards 2024 – nominations revealed!

It’s been a mighty year for Musical Theatre, as demonstrated at the recent audience-voted WhatsOnStage Awards. The Oliviers, however, are voted for by an independent panel and are, as such, considered the most prestigious honours for theatre as a whole.

As predicted, Jamie Lloyd’s Sunset Boulevard is the most nominated production, receiving 11 nominations in total including Best Actress (Nicole Scherzinger), Best Actor (Tom Francis), and Best Actor/Actress in a Supporting Role (David Thaxton, Grace Hodgett Young). Lloyd is also a nominee for the Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director, while the show overall is up for Best Musical Revival alongside Groundhog Day, Hadestown and Guys & Dolls.

The latter production, directed by Nicholas Hytner, is also in contention for several additional awards including Outstanding Musical Contribution (Tom Brady, Charlie Rosen), Best Actor (Daniel Mays), Best Actress (Marisha Wallace), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Cedric Neal) and the Gillian Lynne Award for Best Theatre Choreographer (Arlene Phillips with James Cousins).

Daniel Mays has competition in the Best Actor category from David Cumming for Operation Mincemeat, the aforementioned Tom Francis in Sunset Boulevard, and next issue’s cover star Charlie Stemp for Crazy for You. Wallace, meanwhile, is up against Natasha Hodgson (Operation Mincemeat), Caissie Levy (Next to Normal) and, of course, Scherzinger in Sunset Boulevard.

’Mincefluencers’ will be delighted that their favourite homegrown musical is also in contention for none other than Mastercard Best New Musical, alongside The Little Big Things, Next to Normal and A Strange Loop.
