The intimate venue of the Phoenix Arts Club is the perfect setting for this so-billed ‘intimate London residency’ for stage and screen veteran Tituss Burgess. Most recently seen as Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge! on Broadway, Burgess has chosen a very personal range of repertoire for his two-week run: ‘I just travel in and out of genres leaving me at a total crossroads that lead to impossible mash-ups,’ he explains.

On the night I attended, it was a particularly emotional performance as his close friend, the Broadway and West End star Gavin Creel, had recently passed away. We were treated to a varied set list, accompanied by a superb band, the highlight for me being a belty rendition of ‘Goldfinger’. Burgess’s outstanding voice, both here and across the whole programme, took us from laughter to tears and back again.

Tituss Burgess – The Indecisive Warrior is at the Phoenix Arts Club until 13 October – click here for tickets
