Elton John's fashion industry musical hits its stride in Act Two
In the highly anticipated musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, with an original score by Elton John, Kate Wetherhead’s book understandably adheres closely to the 2006 film’s eminently quotable screenplay, so there’s little scope for originality. Maybe that’s why, as Act One unfolds, it feels like few people are trying… but then something happens. Act Two has confidence and swagger, and the show becomes what it should always have been – a movie-sized story scaled appropriately for the theatre. As fearsome Runway magazine editor Miranda Priestly, Vanessa Williams delivers every acidic barb with enjoyable relish However, The Devil Wears Prada is ultimately less couture, and more of a high-street label.
