The two-time Tony-nominated musical makes its London concert debut for one night only
Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s If/Then originated on Broadway in 2014 and now, for one night only on 10 February, is coming to the Savoy Theatre in London. The show sees 38-year-old Elizabeth return to New York after a divorce, and explores the impact of choice and consequences as her life splits into two parallel paths. Kerry Ellis, who will star as Elizabeth, appeared onstage at the theatre, alongside co-stars David Hunter and Preeya Kalidas and director Bill Buckhurst, at a media launch event in January, ahead of the show’s concert performance – and Musicals magazine went along for the ride.
‘It’s had quite a journey with me,’ said Ellis, who’s been linked with the show for some time now, filming a music video to ‘Always Starting Over’ during the pandemic and, more recently, being involved in the workshop. ‘I’m so excited to share it with people who might not have heard it before or might not be familiar with it.’ The launch event featured performances from Hunter and Kalidas, including hits from the show such as ‘It’s a Sign’ and ‘You Don’t Need to Love Me’. These were followed by a Q&A with the cast hosted by the producers Adam Blanshay and Daniel Hinchcliffe.
Director Bill Buckhurst (Sister Act, The Time Traveller’s Wife – which also starred Hunter) told Musicals why he believed British audience would love it: ‘I think it’s a very human, heartfelt and soulful show, which reminds us we are all intrinsically connected to each other.’
Hunter also spoke to Musicals, saying: ‘This is a really relatable story; it’s about choices we make and how it affects your life moving forward. I think it’s a show that, if it reaches you at the right time, as it does with me, really enables you to reflect on your own life.’
When the show made its Broadway premiere back in 2014, Wicked star Idina Menzel created the role of Elizabeth and joined the show on its US tour the following year. This singular performance at the Savoy will hopefully be a step closer to the show enjoying a fully staged run in the West End.
